NiteClub is a proposal for a small, multi-disciplinary, alternative performance facility in Downtown Manhattan. It is a prototype for a standard lot in the vicinity of Tribeca?s LMM special zoning district, approximately 25? wide and 100? deep. This neighborhood represents a particular cultural, as well as physical, circumstance. The program promotes cross communication of audiences, encouraged by the single admission price at the building entry. This policy (seen in 1985 at the Melkweg in Amsterdam) can be a critical contributor to development of new audiences for avant-garde artists, who may perform simultaneously in the facility?s three performing spaces. It is, of course, a curatorial challenge to develop the full potential of this program. The building will hold an audience of 100 persons in each of the following spaces:
- music
- film. projection. video
- performance. theater. dance
and approximately 60 persons in each of:
- dance floor
- bar
- tea room
NiteClub is an extremely compact result of the unique urban and economic qualities of its context. Its design explores the dialogue between a vertical section and the horizontal performer/spectator relationship which takes place across the proscenium. A centralized building to the rear of the site houses diverse lounges for further communication among all users.
