This project for the NYU Medical Center involved the insertion of a twenty-five story structure into the institution's dense urban campus on Manhattan's East Side. The new facility contains biomolecular research laboratories and offices, medical faculty offices, and staff housing, and its street level lobby functions as the new primary entrance to the entire medical complex. All of the disparate program elements are designed around a common grid, which laces through the vertical section. In its design, the new structure takes significant cues from the architecture of the surrounding medical buildings, but also establishes its own identity through a more sophisticated material palette and the detailed interplay of its components. The facade composition establishes several vertical layers as a way of distinguishing program elements and breaking down the massive scale, while adding visual complexity to the otherwise repetitive structural bay dimensions. As the Senior Designer for the architectural team, it was Mr. Sherman's responsibility to establish coherence and precision in the firm's design concept, and to coordinate the work of a large design team to accommodate rigorous structural, mechanical, environmental and building code criteria, as well as the diverse needs of user groups and city agencies. The construction cost of the building approached 200 million dollars, including furnishings, graphics and 'soft' costs.
