The client, a privately owned quasi-governmental organization, maintains offices worldwide which serve as information centers for companies and individuals wishing to do trade with Hong Kong-based companies. Having commissioned a low-rise, mixed-use, New York headquarters building in 1990, the client?s program called for a new 7,500 sf interior build-out of the base building?s ground floor and below-grade duplex space. In addition to general and executive offices for the resident staff and managers, the client requested a public information library, a multi-purpose exhibition space and an exterior garden for both formal and informal trade events. The mission statement called for a high level of design and execution to foster the appropriate environment for trade events for companies in product and fashion design. The architect was responsible for all aspects of interior design, lighting, furniture and material selection, budget and scheduling control. The office spaces, comprised of both system and custom work stations, are scaled to evoke a residential scale. A major double-height space connects the two-level scheme with a cast-in-place concrete stair clad in brushed stainless steel, architectural steel and natural cherry wood.
