The client is a public relations and marketing agency which relocated from a prior location across Fifth Avenue. They had to select an architect, approve a design, obtain a Building Department permit, and construct their new space in about eight weeks, a process which was made somewhat efficient by the fact that they had a clear schematic design done in-house, and acted as their own general contractor. This process was successful despite the World Trade Center attacks, which crippled lower Manhattan as the drawings were being competed. The Architects created hierarchies within the design by establishing different types of walls of varying heights, materials and geometries. The primary partitions are the tallest and are of eccentric shape, and contain tinted resin windows to filter the eastern light. In this way a visual foreground and background are created, as well as a surprising unfolding of views through which the early twentieth century decorative columns are glimpsed. The plain background elements accurately portray the client?s image as a lean, hard-working set of individuals with no excesses, and with a strong collaborative sensibility. The foreground takes advantage of some new technologies in finishes, and establishes a calm, tasteful ambiance. Back to Portfolio: Commercial |
