QUEENS MUSEUM OF ART
Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, Queens, New York

Partner-in-Charge: David Sherman
Competition Entry: 2001

The proposed interventions to the structure will permit the Queens Museum of Art to subtly respond to the site conditions with versatile exhibition opportunities, by the employment of a number of architectural events. Each of these interventions will be of a modernist formal language to clearly contrast with the restored historic structure. An AMPHITHEATER will occupy the southern half of the restored exhibit hall, permitting the museum's curators opportunities for various contemporary installations and performance pieces, including those with high technology requirements. It also provides an interior gathering place for the public.A 30-foot high TRANSLUCENT fiberglas WALL will stretch the length of the westernside of the exhibit hall creating a luminous backdrop for the interior events. By glazing the southeastern apse of the entry facade, the existing fountain can be reimagined as part of an interior art installation utilizing water, and displayed to the park. The double-height formal GALLERY XL will create a specific and controlled art environment of unique size for both 2- and 3- dimensional large-scale work. And finally, the enclosure of the PANORAMA itself is to have its exterior surface refinished with highly luminous specular paint to accentuate its positive formal quality within the huge hall, and to create an alternative background surface for the
display of art.
