Drawing of Main House Drawing of Carriage House A competition brief with a mission of affordability evolved as an investigation into sustainable energy usage. Four Main Houses face the street and four Carriage Houses face an alley. The resulting tandems of 4 identical plots, each a level higher than the next, form a terraced interior courtyard which combines qualities of seclusion and expansiveness. All views are internalized to the courtyard. The entire project is modular to be constructed of plywood-product stress-skin panels and utilizes passive solar heating technology. Copper detailing enriches the natural palette, while a heat-circulating fireplace contributes to the energy efficiency. The project represents an attempt to synthesize the various concerns of ecology and construction technology with a disciplined language of form, and a parallel effort to make virtues of economy and simplicity. The new architectural vocabulary initiated by this project has been sustained in succeeding house designs for clients of the firm. The NYC/AIA awards jury wrote: "This is a very wise project. It marries a number of venerable things, and there is an attention to affordable housing that is serious, not only in terms of materials but in the way it functions. In terms of form and massing, it respects the neighborhood. It makes a gesture that says modern architecture is not dead. It does all of those proper things and also pushes the edge, asks the question of what a house can be, of how a house works."
