The design for a 6,500 square foot guesthouse is set within an existing estate in a bucolic setting. The site is adjacent to a large sloped grazing paddock that contains herds of animals that the owner enjoys raising, but rarely saw. In siting the house, a small flat area was selected at the edge between the domain of the animals and people. A natural dip in the topography separated the western facing terrace of the house and the paddock, creating a barrier for the animals without the use of fences. Set against the far brow of the hillside and the reservoir beyond, sundown viewing of the herds became possible as they came to their feed and watering holes. The single-level public rooms of the house faced the terrace with large glazed openings set under roof overhangs. An outdoor hearth complimented the use of the terrace. Farther up the hill, a two-story wing housed bedrooms. These two volumes were separated by a glazed enclosure that could be opened in the summer, running contiguously from the grade at the entry to the terrace. The major materials are un-coursed field stone rubble, old growth Douglas fir timbers, trusses and window wall frames, western red cedar siding, unpainted plaster and weathered Terne metal roofing.
