BARN/HOUSE RENOVATION
Stone Ridge, NY

Abelow Sherman Architects
Partner-in-Charge: David Sherman
Contractor: Porcelli Construction
Completed: 2004
Project Team: Sebastian Kaempf

A Manhattan couple searched for years for an appropriate property for their country house. When the land was finally found, it did in fact have all the important attributes they had sought: distant mountain panorama, western sunset vista, and proximity to a working community. It also came with a house that had started its life as a barn nearby, then had been relocated and transformed into something of a center-hall colonial house.

The architect?s mission was to restore and reinforce the Barn properties that were so appealing about the structure, while at the same time providing for the owners? tastes for a comfortable Modernism.

The repetitive ground level bays were restored, a new cedar deck, porch and stair added, and the interior was refurbished. The massive scale of the upper level and its windows to the west were also achieved by removing the chimney breast and rebuilding the west wall in its entirety.
