A lower Manhattan loft space in a former printer?s shop is distinguished by its Hudson River views and 8-window frontage. The owner?s growing family needs suggested that they search for new space, or engage in the exploration of a re-design. Preliminary sketches demonstrated that by curving the walls inward of two bedrooms at the middle of the loft, it would create a self-contained volume that defined living and master bedroom space to either side. This gesture evolved further becoming an elliptical shape with flush curvilinear opaque doors around the perimeter, and wood frame and translucent glass doors, panels, and transoms set within the volume?s interior. The loft's entry sequence plays off the curve of a long closet wall that recalls the ellipse. An open kitchen is set within the transition from the entry to the living room, and is set off by existing timber columns that were previously encased and that are here newly exposed.
