Located in the Upper Central Park West Historic District in Manhattan, this 1,600
square foot alteration combines two apartments, on the eleventh floor of an eleven-story beaux-arts style brick, terra cotta and stone apartment building that overlooks Hayden Planetarium. Combining the apartments required rigorous space planning and careful relocating of existing services. Functionally, the space needed to address the couple?s multivalent
requirements as avid readers, art collectors, professional chef, and accomplished musician with an extensive collection of classical recordings. An existing kitchen was relocated. Upon demolition, the base Building?s hot and cold water pipes were exposed and running through the ceiling of this apartment. Due to the age of the pipes, extensive non-destructive ultra-sonic tests were initially undertaken, the results of which led to the replacement of the Building?s water distribution system. Approved by the Landmarks Preservation Commission, all windows were replaced with multi-paned insulated Crittal steel windows complete with bronze-cast window hardware taken from the original hardware. With the material selections, an attempt was made to illustrate a dialectic between static and motion; solid and transparent, machine
formed and nature made. Donald Kaufman?s "white on white" paint scheme was mixed directly from the selected material finishes including the couple?s art collection. Cold and warm whites are off-set by flat and hand-rubbed glossy paint finishes which further enhances the dynamic spatial qualities of this alteration.
