The client moved into a two bedroom apartment that had previously been three separate apartments, two of which were studios. The combination had been cosmetically appealing, but too conventionally compartmentalized. It was decided to turn the living/dining/kitchen area into a virtual loft, and to replace and increase the windows in that room. A new kitchen was installed which contrasted the sleekness of stainless steel, epoxy resin, and opaque mirrored glass, with a rough-hewn cor-ten steel backsplash. A rubber tile floor serves as a working surface and foreground frame. The remainder of the apartment was stripped of its traditional detail and color, where possible, and reimagined as a minimalist apartment with a master bedroom suite, guest suite, and library.
