On West End Avenue a couple assembled five adjacent apartments in order to create a sprawling family dwelling. A previous project had started the process with three apartments, and the living/dining rooms from that project were left intact. The interior designer and general contractor were common to both efforts. Abelow Sherman created a new floor plan that would preserve the highly successful work of those rooms, while integrating them with a new Family Room; Study; expanded Master Bedroom suite; Guest suite; and a new eat-in Kitchen. All of this required an ability to make pre-war rooms and studios into a larger, more coherent whole, with satisfying proportions and a proper flow. Finishes and furnishings were generated by the interior designer, while it was the architect's responsibility to design the lighting and custom millwork, and coordinate the mostly invisible work of a retrofit dimming system, central air conditioning, and state-of-the-art audio/visual system.
